Every dollar that comes into Focal Comics has already been spent in our heads before it arrives — on an artist’s rate, a colourist’s invoice, a spotlight somebody has earned and never been given. Income was never the goal here. It is only ever the fuel for the thing we are actually building.
By Choice, Not By Accident
Not-for-profit is the whole design
We are not-for-profit by choice, not by circumstance. We are actively working to become a registered non-profit, and until that status is formalised, “not-for-profit” describes our mission and where the money goes — not a tax status. The profit was never the point. It was never going to be. A universe this size could absolutely be built to maximise revenue. We built it to maximise something else entirely.
The Trend We’re Fighting
Everyone else is going one direction
The rest of the industry has a clear trajectory: replace the artist, keep the margin. Every membership and every contribution to Focal exists to push against that trend, on purpose, with intent. We are not neutral about it. We built an entire mission around being the exception.
Every Dime
Where the money actually goes
Every dime we make is spent the same way: replacing an AI placeholder with a real, living, breathing, creative person. Someone who trained for this, who is good at it, and who deserves to be paid for it. That is the literal function this money performs, not a slogan on a page. A placeholder holds a character’s spot until the budget exists to hire a human for it. Your membership is what makes the budget exist.
Paid, Platformed, Spotlighted
More than a paycheck
Getting paid is only the floor. From there, the artists, writers, and creatives who join this mission get platformed and spotlighted publicly, their names built into the promotion instead of buried in a credits line nobody reads. We are building a collective of independents made for exactly this: people who do extraordinary work and have never had an audience-funded engine built to put them in front of the people who would love it.
Income is the fuel. It was never the destination.
The Measure
How we grade ourselves
We do not measure a good year by the number on the statement. We measure it by how many placeholders became real people, how many artists got paid what they were worth, and how many of them got seen by someone who would never have found them otherwise. That is the outcome. The income was only ever how we got there.
See It In Motion
Watch the mission spend itself
This is not a promise we are asking you to take on faith. Every placeholder that gets replaced is logged in public, on the page, with the artist’s name attached to it — paid or donated, either way, for everyone to see. If you want to be part of what funds the next one, a membership or a contribution is exactly how.
